How to file a roof insurance claim after hail

A plain walk-through of the claim process, from the morning after the storm to the final payment.

We are roofers, not adjusters or lawyers. Nothing here is a coverage opinion. Your policy and your carrier decide what is covered.

1. Look, safely, and take photos

From the ground, photograph dents in gutters, downspouts, vents, window screens and anything on the patio. Note the date and time of the storm. Do not climb onto the roof.

2. Get the roof inspected

A roofer on the roof can find bruising that is invisible from the ground. Our inspection gives you test-square hit counts and photos for each slope.

3. Call your insurer

Report the damage and the storm date. Your policy sets the deadline for reporting, so do not wait until next season. The carrier will assign an adjuster.

4. The adjuster visit

The adjuster inspects the roof and writes an estimate. You can ask your roofer to be there; we point out what we documented. The adjuster decides what the carrier will pay for.

5. Compare estimates

We compare the carrier's estimate with ours line by line. If items were missed, such as decking found during tear-off, a supplement is submitted with photos.

6. The work and payment

Many policies pay in two parts: an initial payment, then the remainder once the work is done and invoiced. Your deductible is your responsibility. We never offer to waive, absorb or rebate it.

About storm chasers

After big hail years, out-of-area crews knock on doors across the Springs. Before signing anything, check that the contractor is registered with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department and will pull a permit, and do not sign a contract that hands over your claim.

Quick answers

Will a claim raise my premium?

That depends on your carrier and policy. Ask your agent; we cannot advise on it.

What if the adjuster says there is no damage?

You can ask for a re-inspection, and we can share our photos with the carrier.
