Wind and storm damage

Storm damage roof repair in Colorado Springs

Downslope winds off the mountains and summer thunderstorms both peel shingles. We close the roof first and repair it properly after.

Wind-torn shingles and exposed underlayment on a home after a Front Range thunderstorm

Wind damage looks different from hail. Instead of bruises you find shingles in the yard, ridge caps torn off, tabs folded back on themselves, and sometimes a pine limb sitting on the roof. Any of these can let water in with the next storm, so speed matters more than it does with hail.

The order we work in

First, stop the water. Exposed underlayment or open decking gets a tarp held down with wooden battens screwed through into the roof, not sandbags that slide off in the next gust.

Second, record it. Photos of every damaged area and of anything that came down, dated, for you and your carrier.

Third, repair. Replacement shingles are fastened and hand-sealed, ridge caps are re-run, and bent flashing is replaced rather than hammered flat.

When the wind damage is really an old roof

Shingles that blow off in a moderate wind have often lost their seal years earlier. If we find widespread unsealed tabs, we will say so and price a repair and a replacement side by side. A newer roof that lost shingles in a real windstorm is a different story, and usually a straightforward repair.

Questions about storm damage repair

Will you tarp my roof at night?

Call and describe what happened. If a tarp can be put on safely we schedule it as soon as possible; we will not send anyone onto a wet, dark roof if it is unsafe.

Is wind damage covered by insurance?

Many homeowner policies cover sudden wind damage. Your policy and adjuster decide; we provide the photos and the repair scope.

A tree hit my roof. Who do I call first?

If the tree is touching power lines, call the utility and stay clear. Otherwise call us to tarp, and a tree service to remove the limb.
